Melania Trump, first lady, unveils Christmas decor theme: ‘Home Is Where the Heart Is’

First lady Melania Trump unveiled on Monday the White House’s Christmas decor, which emphasizes the “warmth and comfort” of home with traditional touches and a nod toward next year’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

This year’s theme is titled “Home is Where the Heart Is.”

The first lady said it is a reflection of the joys and challenges of balancing motherhood and public-facing business.

“The constant movement has taught me that home is not merely a physical space; rather, it is the warmth and comfort I carry within, regardless of my surroundings,” Mrs. Trump said. “This Christmas, let’s celebrate the love we hold within ourselves and share it with the world around us. After all, wherever we are, we can create a home filled with grace, radiance, and endless possibilities.”

Mrs. Trump enlisted a well-known designer, Hervé Pierre, to decorate the Red Room of the White House with blue butterflies, a symbol of the “transformation and renewal” around the Christmas season.

Mr. Pierre also created a keepsake booklet for tour guests to take home.

Patriotic exhibits in red, while and blue adorn the East Room in a look ahead to the 250th anniversary of the U.S.’s founding, while the Green Room will feature presidential portraits made of 6,000 puzzle pieces.

The White House will feature 75 wreaths with classic red bows in the windows. All told, the White House decor will feature more than 50 Christmas trees, 700 feet of garland, 25,000 feet of ribbon and 10,000 butterflies.

The White House holiday decor is a major annual undertaking that requires hundreds of volunteers. It is unveiled after Thanksgiving each year, allowing visitors to enjoy it in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Other notable 2025 features include:

• The Blue Room features the official White House Christmas tree, an 18-foot fir from Sidney, Michigan, that honors Gold Star families, meaning the immediate relatives of someone who died in U.S. military service. The tree is decorated with gold stars and ornaments representing the official bird and flower of every U.S. state and territory.

• The Gingerbread House in the State Room is made of 120 pounds of gingerbread and features the South Portico and parts of the Yellow Oval Room. The Grand Foyer will feature parts of the historic White House creche, which is undergoing renovation.

“As Americans explore the historic rooms of the White House this holiday season,” the White House said, “the 2025 Christmas decorations serve as a reminder that the strength of our Nation is found in its people — in our shared values, valued traditions, and the steadfast belief that home is where the heart is.”
