Marjorie Taylor Greene says Mike Johnson’s days as speaker are ‘numbered’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is amping up her threat to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson from his position as she continues to bash him for working with Democrats.

“Permanent funding for Ukraine is exactly what they want and Mike Johnson will give it to them,” Ms. Greene, Georgia Republican, wrote in an X post Sunday. “Peace is not an option for them because it doesn’t fit the government appropriations war business and economic model, which is vile and disgusting.”

“They’re [sic] plan is keep funding the proxy war with Russia in Ukraine and when that doesn’t work, after all the Ukrainian men have been slaughtered, next they will put American troops on the ground,” she wrote. “Johnson will do whatever [President] Biden/[Senate Majority Leader Charles E.] Schumer [New York Democrat] want in order to keep the Speaker’s gavel in his hand, but he has completely sold out the Republican voters who gave us the majority.”

“His days as Speaker are numbered,” she said.

Ms. Greene has been threatening Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republic, with a motion to vacate since last month as retaliation for supporting a bipartisan government funding bill, but has not yet called for a vote on it.

There was speculation that she would call for a vote after Mr. Johnson worked with Democrats to pass a four-bill foreign aid package that included tens of billions for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Mr. Biden signed the package last week.

Mr. Johnson has said that he is not scared of the motion to vacate, and maintains that he did what he needed to do as speaker.

With a slim Republican majority in the House, Mr. Johnson would need to depend on Democrats once again to survive a motion to vacate vote. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, New York Democrat, has already signaled that Democrats would likely vote to save him.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz said Sunday that there is “no way” his colleagues would let Ms. Greene remove the speaker.

“I’m not going to let her do that,” Mr. Moskowitz, Florida Republican, said on MSNBC’s “The Weekend.” “We won’t even let her name a post office. We’re not going to let her take out the speaker.”

With important votes out of the way, Ms. Greene might be able to call a vote on the motion to vacate this week.
