Marilyn Mosby, convicted ex-Baltimore state’s attorney, calls on President Biden to pardon her

Former Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby is calling for President Biden to pardon her of perjury and fraud crimes convictions she got while in office.

Mosby, who is awaiting sentencing, told MSNBC that the convictions were “politically targeted.”

An online petition to Mr. Biden calling for her pardon has over 11,000 signatures as of Thursday. The petition wasn’t launched by Mosby, but she has reportedly been promoting it.

When asked about the pardon, Mosby said it would be “appropriate.”

“I know I’ve done nothing wrong, nothing criminal, and to be separated from my children for 40 years as a result of withdrawing $90,000 of my own money, it just makes absolutely no sense, it is illogical,” she said.

A jury convicted her in November of two counts of perjury after the government said she lied about facing financial hardship during the pandemic to get money from her city retirement account that she then used to buy two vacation homes in Florida.

She was found guilty in February of one count of mortgage fraud for making false statements on mortgage applications for the two homes. Prosecutors said she never mentioned a tax lien and a signed contract she had to rent out one of the homes, to get lower interest rates. Renting out the home was prohibited by the mortgage company.

Mosby is scheduled to be sentenced on May 23. She faces up to 40 years behind bars.

She argues that she did nothing wrong because no public money was used.

“This is not PPE loans, this is not COVID relief funding. This is the money I was putting away every two weeks in a retirement savings account,” she said.

She said she was “targeted” for the progressive actions she took while in office.

“They have targeted me,” Mosby said. “This is a four-year-long investigation where they combed every aspect of my life, unannounced, going into people’s homes, knocking on my neighbor’s doors, intimidating folks, issuing subpoenas to the Black churches five months before my re-election, not only to get me out of office, but they’ve done this to demonize me and to vilify me and to break me psychologically, professionally, break me spiritually, break me financially.”

The website Justice For Marilyn Mosby has been set up that has the links to the pardon petition and a GoFundMe account.
