German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt on Tuesday inaugurated the country’s new federal police drone defense unit, which can be deployed across the country and “is equipped with the latest technology for smart drone defense.”
The unit is designed to detect, intercept, or shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles.
Up to 130 police officers will work for the drone defense unit.
In addition to the new unit, German airports are being updated to detect and defend against drones, the German interior ministry said in a statement.
The establishment of a new drone unit comes as Germany and other European countries have been struggling with drone incursions above military bases and other important infrastructure, which have led to several temporary airport closures.
