Democrats’ billboards warn Michigan voters that Donald Trump backs abortion bans

Democrats are looking to tap into rage over Roe in Michigan.

The Democratic National Committee has erected a pair of billboards on well-traveled roadways near the site of former President Donald Trump’s scheduled rally on Wednesday in Freeland, warning drivers that the Republicans want to strip away their abortion rights.

Trump: I was able to kill Roe v Wade,” the billboard reads in all capital letters. “And he won’t stop until abortion is banned nationwide. Including Michigan.”

The signs are part of a multi-layered effort to highlight the role Mr. Trump played in clearing the way for stricter abortion laws to be enacted in states such as Florida, where a six-week abortion ban kicks in Wednesday.

“There is one person responsible for this nightmare: Donald Trump. Trump brags about overturning Roe v. Wade, making extreme bans like Florida’s possible, saying his plan is working ‘brilliantly,’” President Biden said Wednesday in a statement. “He thinks it’s brilliant that more than four million women in Florida, and more than one in three women in America can’t get access to the care they need.”

Mr. Trump has celebrated nominating the conservative Supreme Court justices who overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade decision, which provided a constitutional right to abortion.

However, Mr. Trump has frustrated pro-life groups and Christian conservatives by saying he does not support a federal abortion ban and is intent on leaving the issue to the states to decide if he wins November’s election.

Democrats say Mr. Trump is a proven liar as they try to keep the issue front and center in the election, seeing it as a possible lifeline for Mr. Biden.

Democrats say Mr. Trump secretly backs a federal abortion ban and has opened the door for states to pass draconian abortion limits that hinder the individual freedom of women.

Trump and MAGA Republicans won’t stop until women in Michigan and across the country suffer under an abortion ban,” said DNC spokesperson Stephanie Justice. “Michiganders won’t stand for Trump’s extreme, anti-choice agenda and MAGA-backed abortion bans, and they’ll reject him once again in November.”
