County commissioner in Texas withdraws plan to designate portion of road as Charlie Kirk memorial

An Austin, Texas-area official who wanted to designate part of Farm to Market Road 969 as a memorial to Charlie Kirk tabled the plans at a meeting Monday.

Bastrop County Commissioner David Glass, a Republican, introduced a resolution last month for the Texas Legislature to support designating the stretch of FM 969 from the county line to State Highway 71 as the Charlie Kirk Corridor in the next legislative session.

At Monday’s Bastrop County Commissioners Court meeting, Mr. Glass tabled the plan before action could be taken after receiving emails from constituents.

“Two-thirds of them were from very considerate constituents asking me to postpone the vote and/or to reconsider the resolution. I felt that I would honor their request. I replied to every email myself. The other 1/3 were very hateful with threats, etc. … It was to never rename the road but rather [make it a] memorial designation,” Mr. Glass told the Austin American-Statesman.

Memorial designations do not change the official name of a road and cannot be put in place by county officials. That’s why the proposed resolution put the onus on state legislators, who do have the power to give roads memorial designations.

Mr. Glass also told the newspaper that he does not plan to reintroduce the resolution.

Kirk, co-founder of the conservative political organization Turning Point USA, was shot dead at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 in the middle of an outdoor event on campus.

Tyler Robinson, 22, is accused of the act and is facing seven charges, including aggravated murder. If he is found guilty of killing Kirk, a judge could levy the death penalty.
