Californian pleads guilty to 2 counts of grand larceny in $50K Pokemon card heist in Fairfax

A California man pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of grand larceny after stealing Pokémon cards worth thousands, as well as a designer bag, from a home in Fairfax, Virginia, in July.

Mohammad Asif, 36, pleaded guilty in Fairfax County Circuit Court and is due back there on March 13 for sentencing on the two grand larceny counts, according to court records.

On July 23, Asif broke into a Fair Oaks home and stole the cards and bag while the homeowner, a friend of his, was away. The stolen cards were worth around $50,000, according to Washington’s WRC-TV.

In order to draw the homeowner away, Asif allegedly held up the man’s girlfriend at gunpoint at a parking garage in Tysons. After she called the unnamed Fair Oaks homeowner for help, he drove to the garage to help her. That left the home unattended, and Asif went there to complete the heist.

Asif’s cellphone pinged at both the parking garage and the house, and investigators told WRC-TV they believe Asif acted alone.

The Fairfax County commonwealth’s attorney has not decided whether to pursue new charges against Asif over the alleged Tysons incident.
