California Gov. Gavin Newsom is warning that former President Donald Trump’s view that states should decide abortion limits could make women fugitives from the law.
Mr. Newsom’s Campaign for Democracy political action committee started airing a new ad Monday in Alabama showing a couple of young women getting pulled over before they can cross state lines to receive abortion services.
“Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care,” the ad’s narrator says.
Alabama has one of the strictest abortion laws in the country. It does not include exceptions for cases of rape and incest.
Republicans in the state are considering legislation that would make it a crime for people who help girls under the age of 18 get an abortion without informing a parent or guardian.
The advertisement shows two visibly shaken women passing a sign indicating they are a mile from the Alabama state border.
“We are almost there — you are going to make it,” one of the women says before they hear a siren and a police officer pulls them over.
“Miss I am going to need you to step out of the vehicle [and] take a pregnancy test,” the officer says as he holds up what appears to be a home pregnancy test.
Mr. Newsom’s group ran a similar themed ad last month in Tennessee.
