In a strange and unsettling event that has captured widespread attention, a Brazilian woman was discovered attempting to secure a bank loan using her deceased uncle’s body.
The incident led to a police investigation and raised several questions about the circumstances leading up to the man’s death. Now, new details have emerged about the bizarre incident.
The deceased, identified as 68-year-old Paulo Roberto Braga, was found to have been suffering from malnutrition at the time of his death, with initial autopsy reports suggesting broncho-aspiration and heart failure as the cause of death, according to an autopsy report obtained by Metrópoles.
But subsequent medical evaluations have raised suspicions that Mr. Braga may have been poisoned, prompting further toxicological tests.
Reports indicate that Mr. Braga had a history of health complications requiring special care, including recent treatments for pneumonia and tachycardia. He was also known to be dependent on oxygen and had difficulty swallowing.
The unusual plot came to light when Mr. Braga‘s niece, 42-year-old Erika de Souza Vieira Nunes, was caught on camera attempting to use Mr. Braga‘s hand to sign off on a $3,250 loan application. Bank staff, alarmed by Mr. Braga‘s appearance, promptly contacted the authorities, leading to Ms. Nunes’ arrest.
Ms. Nunes’ arrest went viral after a video emerged of her pretending Mr. Braga was alive.
“Uncle, are you listening? You need to sign [the loan contract]. If you don’t sign, there’s no way, because I can’t sign for you,” Ms. Nunes can be heard saying in the video first aired by TV Globo.
The case took a more bizarre turn with the emergence of video footage showing Ms. Nunes with Mr. Braga‘s body at the bank, as well as a separate video capturing a visit to the emergency room the day before the bank incident, with Mr. Braga still alive.
