Early morning fog on U.S. Route 84 in Jones County, Mississippi, led to a 20-vehicle crash that put 12 people in the hospital and injured nine others.
The crash happened Wednesday near where the highway intersects with a local road. The Jones County Sheriff’s Department did not say which car or truck crashed first.
The affected vehicles included a log truck that overturned, at least one 18-wheeler truck and a variety of cars, law enforcement told WDAM-TV.
At around 7:04 a.m. local time, the Mississippi Department of Transportation put out an alert on X noting that multiple vehicles had crashed and that there continued to be heavy fog in the area. Initially, both lanes were blocked.
Authorities did not specify the severity of the injuries suffered by the 12 people taken to the local hospitals, but there were no immediate fatalities. Nine people refused transportation but received treatment at the scene.
Delays caused by the pile-up lasted until just before 2 p.m. local time, per an update on X from state transportation officials.
