Student at Stone Bridge High School killed by maintenance vehicle near the school

A student at Stone Bridge High School died Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle driven by a Loudoun County Public Schools employee.

Calina Yu, 20, was at the intersection of Claiborne Parkway and Portsmouth Boulevard in Ashburn around 9:13 a.m. when she was struck by the vehicle, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office did not identify the driver, who was driving a maintenance vehicle. Ms. Yu was pronounced dead at the scene, though the sheriff’s office did not specify her cause of death. The driver stayed at the scene to speak to law enforcement.

In a letter to families, Stone Bridge High School Principal Timothy Flynn said that “it is with deep sadness that we share that the Stone Bridge student who was struck by a vehicle near the school this morning has passed away. As you can imagine, we are heartbroken by this loss,” according to WTTG-TV.

Claiborne Parkway was closed for hours following the accident, reopening at  1:53 p.m., per a post on social media from the sheriff’s office. Stone Bridge also cancelled all after school activities, according to WTTG-TV.
