George Conway joins New York race for Congress

Anti-Trump pundit and attorney George Conway launched his congressional campaign Tuesday for a Manhattan House seat by depicting himself as a defender against President Trump.

His introductory two-minute campaign video includes clips from the Jan. 6, 2021, riots, a woman being taken away by federal immigration officers and images of Mr. Trump with late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The video is reminiscent of the sharp-elbowed videos released by Mr. Conway’s Lincoln Project that worked against Mr. Trump’s 2020 reelection bid.

“We have a corrupt president, a mendacious president, a criminal president whose masked agents are disappearing people from our streets, who’s breaking international law, and he’s running our federal government like a mob protection racket,” Mr. Conway says in the ad.

The former Republican turned independent in 2018 following his fallout with Mr. Trump registered to become a Democrat in December and is running to be the successor to the retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler, also a Democrat, in New York’s 12th Congressional District.

Mr. Conway is expected to face a large pool of other Democratic contenders vying for Mr. Nadler’s seat this year, including state Assemblymember Alex Bores, former Nadler aide and state Assemblymember Micah Lasher and Kennedy family member Jack Schlossberg.

The district is deep blue and not likely to be competitive in the November election, so the winner of the Democratic primary will probably fill the seat.

Mr. Conway, a first-time candidate, was married to Fox News Channel’s Kellyanne Conway, who was Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign manager before she became senior counselor to the president during his first term. The Conways divorced in 2023.
