A painting of America’s first president was stolen from an Englewood, Colorado, storage unit last month, the city’s police department announced on Facebook Tuesday.
The George Washington depiction dates to the early 19th century. It’s 24 by 30 inches with a gold frame.
Police said they couldn’t determine the monetary value of the “national treasure.”
The painting had been in the family of its owner for over 50 years, police spokeswoman Crystal Essman told USA Today.
The theft was reported on Jan. 22, but police believe the artwork was taken on the night of Jan. 10.
The FBI Denver Field Office said on X it’s assisting in investigating the theft. The police also asked the public for help. Tipsters can get a reward of up to $2,000, police said.
