Conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, and conservative commentator Candace Owens announced a “productive” hourslong conversation amid bubbling tension.
“Erika and I had an extremely productive 4 1/2 hour meeting that I think we both feel should have taken place a lot earlier than it did,” Ms. Owens said on social media Monday.
Ms. Kirk had announced that they would meet following her request that Ms. Owens stop pushing conspiracy theories about her late husband’s assassination.
Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was gunned down on Sept. 10, and Ms. Owens, a former Turning Point USA employee, has amplified plot theories online about the assassination.
Tyler Robinson, 22, faces a murder charge for the killing, and Utah prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty.
Ms. Owens has expressed doubt about prosecutors’ explanations that Mr. Robinson appeared to confess to his romantic partner in Discord group messages.
His parents are reported to have recognized their son in images authorities released of the suspected shooter, then convinced him to turn himself in to the police.
But Ms. Owens has frequently promoted schemes without providing proof.
She said on social media after meeting Ms. Kirk that the two agreed much more than she had anticipated, but disagreed on “various points and people.”
“Most importantly, we were able to share intel and clarify intent,” Ms. Owens continued. “I will of course have a full rundown for you all tomorrow as I am currently exhausted, but I wanted to quickly let you guys know that absolutely nothing was held back and the immediate result was that tensions were thawed.”
Ms. Kirk agreed that the conversation was productive, adding that there is “more to come” from both of them.
Kirk’s widow took over as Turning Point USA’s CEO after his assassination, and Ms. Owens has publicly criticized Ms. Kirk’s motives. The political commentator has suggested that Turning Point USA insiders were part of a plot to assassinate Kirk.
