The funeral of former Vice President Dick Cheney is underway Thursday at Washington National Cathedral without any sign of President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance.
Former Presidents George W. Bush and Joseph R. Biden and former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris and Mike Pence are among the dignitaries at the service.
Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney’s daughter Liz Cheney were to deliver eulogies for the longtime GOP politician.
As with Liz Cheney, Dick Cheney was a political foe of Mr. Trump and took the unusual step of endorsing Ms. Harris, a Democrat, in the 2024 election.
Mr. Cheney died on Nov. 3 at age 84 after suffering a bout of pneumonia. He was vice president under Mr. Bush from 2001-09 and previously was chief of staff to President Gerald Ford.
Mr. Cheney also served in the U.S. House, representing Wyoming, from 1979-89, then shifted to defense secretary until 1993.
Also in attendance at the funeral are former Cabinet members and Wyoming’s GOP senators, John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis.
Lawmakers who served on the Democratic-led Jan. 6 Committee, which investigated Mr. Trump for his actions leading to the riot, are at the cathedral.
Sen. Adam B. Schiff and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, both California Democrats and staunch Trump foes, are also there.
