Ohio woman killed by male deer in home attack

An Ohio woman who dedicated her time to rescuing injured deer was recently killed by a male deer in an enclosure at her home.

Jodi Proger, 64, got trapped in a pen with the deer at her residence in Stewartsville, 70 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, on Saturday, the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office said.

Ms. Proger’s family tried to stop and dispatch the deer before it reached her, but were unsuccessful.

The animal was ultimately killed by deputies when they arrived at 10:27 p.m. The sheriff’s office did not say what, if anything, prompted the deer to attack her.

Ms. Proger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office has reached out to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources about her death.

“The victim and her husband possessed the appropriate permits required for maintaining deer on private land. Despite immediate efforts, Mrs. Proger had already succumbed to her injuries. … This appears to have been an unfortunate and isolated event,” Belmont County Coroner Amanda Fisher said, according to The Times Leader.

Ms. Proger, a wildlife advocate, spent the past 12 years working with animals, according to her obituary.
