Vandals struck at a veterans memorial at a park about 23 miles northeast of Denver last week, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.
The Adams County Veterans Memorial, located in Riverdale Regional Park in Brighton, Colorado, is a replica of the World War II battleship USS Colorado. The memorial was vandalized with white spray paint and a bench was damaged, Adams County Parks officials said on social media.
The defacement happened Wednesday, just a day after residents laid flowers at the memorial for Veterans Day, Adams County Parks Director Byron Fanning told KCNC-TV.
It is the 10th time vandals have struck the memorial in the past two years.
The parks officials blurred out what was scrawled on the memorial in photos posted on social media.
In addition to the surfaces and a bench damaged by the spray paint, restrooms at the memorial were also damaged, requiring water to be pumped out of a vault.
Mr. Fanning told KCNC-TV the damages cost between $2,500 and $3,000 to fix.
Adams County Parks officials asked residents to report any suspicious behavior at the memorial immediately to 911, adding that “together, we can ensure this memorial remains a place of honor and respect for our community.”
