Mamdami Won’t Credit Trump for Ceasefire and Won’t Say Hamas Should Give Up Weapons – HotAir

Zohran Mamdani appeared on Fox News today for an interview with Martha MacCallum. After introducing him as the current leader in the race for mayor of New York City, MacCallum asked him about the recent news out of Gaza. Specifically, she asked if Mamdani would give credit to President Trump for the ceasefire. Mamdami basically refused to do so, instead offering a word salad in which he suggested it was too soon to tell if the ceasefire would last.

“When it comes to the ceasefire I am thankful and I have hope that it will actually endure and that it will be lasting,” he said. He continued, “I continue to have concerns because I’ve seen reports, still, in the last few days that five Palestinians were killed by the Israeli military. And that’s what gives me pause about issuing any kind of praise or celebration at a moment when it is still in its infancy.”

MacCullum tried again, asking if he would give Trump credit or not. He replied, “I think it’s too early to do so.” He added that if it was durable and lasting they “I think you give credit.” But he never said when or to whom. He couldn’t bring himself to utter Trump’s name in this context.

This is very similar to the answer he gave to almost the same question in a previous interview on CNN. In that case, he said he couldn’t issue any credit to the president until it was clear that the hostages would be returned and the “genocide ends.”

The hostages, at least the living ones, have been returned but it’s still too soon. My guess is Mamdani is going to keep coming up with excuses not to give President Trump any credit for this but I guess we’ll see.

MacCallum then pressed him on the fact that Hamas was in fact killing Palestinians this week. She also noted that Mamdami has called the war a stain on Israel and the US and sometimes failed to even mention the 10/7 attack. Asked if he had anything to say about Hamas’ behavior, including its failure to return the bodies of the dead hostages, he said the bodies should be returned and tried to change the subject.

MacCallum then came back with one more question about Gaza: “Do you believe that Hamas should lay down their weapons and leave the leadership in Gaza?” As you’ll see in this clip, Mamdami once again dodged the question. Even when pressed, he would not say Hamas should disarm.

“I don’t really have opinions about the future of Hamas and Israel beyond the question of justice and safety and the fact that anything has to abide by international law,” he said. The idea that Mamdani hasn’t taken sides on these issues is pretty absurd.

Lastly, MacCallum asked if he would still attempt to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he came to NYC. Mamdami said he would still support this, though couldn’t explain how it would be legal to do so. He admitted, when prompted, that the US is not a party to the International Criminal Court but said he thinks we should support their arrest warrants anyway. He also said he wouldn’t pass any new laws to make the arrest possible. In other words, he’s just spouting off anti-Israel nonsense which has zero legal grounds for actually happening.

Here’s the full interview (everything mentioned above) cued up to the question about Netanyahu.
