A 60-year-old woman was rescued from inside a garbage truck by firefighters in Manchester, New Hampshire, but not before being compacted.
The garbage truck on Monday picked up a dumpster and emptied it into the truck’s trash compactor. The victim, who was not named by authorities, was buried within the pile of trash.
The truck compacted the trash — and the woman — at least four times before a camera inside revealed the woman to the driver who then called 911, fire officials told WFXT-TV.
Witnesses said the woman, who was hospitalized with serious injuries, was in significant pain before being rescued.
“All you heard was screaming. She was in agony,” Amanda Czzowitz told the news outlet.
Officials did not say how long the woman had been stuck inside the truck.
She later told investigators that she fell into the dumpster while disposing of her trash, Manchester Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Beaudet told WMUR-TV.
Responders use a basket and a crane atop a fire truck to help hoist her to safety.
“In 32 years, I’ve never seen anything like this my whole career,” said Battalion Chief Beaudet. “That was definitely one for the books.”
