Pentagon: 3 U.S. troops killed, 25 others wounded in drone strike near Jordan-Syria border

Pentagon officials said Sunday that three American troops were killed and 25 others were wounded in a drone attack that targeted a base in northeast Jordan near the border with Syria.

U.S. Central Command did not identify the victims of the one-way drone attack or who was behind the strike.

The U.S. has about 2,500 troops who officially ended their combat mission against the Islamic State in December 2021. The personnel who remain in Iraq and Syria are in an advisory role to Iraqi and Kurdish security forces. U.S. forces withdrew from Iraq in 2011 but returned in 2014 to continue the anti-ISIS operations.

Since mid-October, U.S. personnel in the region have come under fire more than 150 times by Iran-backed militias opposed to Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
