Disney commits $1.9 billion or more to upgrade California theme park

Walt Disney Co. plans to spend at least $1.9 billion over 10 years to improve Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

The DisneylandForward project was proposed in 2021 and is up for consideration this year by the Anaheim City Council, which saw details Tuesday.

Disneyland would have a new mix of park attractions, shopping, dining and hotels.

The company would spend $1.9 billion to $2.5 billion on improvements within a decade of Anaheim officials signing onto the project.

In addition, Disney would contribute $85 million for work done on streets in Anaheim near the resort, $30 million for affordable housing, $10 million for sewer improvements and $8 million for parks around Anaheim within a year of approval, per a fact sheet from city officials.

City officials said the tentative timeline for approval is for the Anaheim Planning Commission to start hearings in March, with the city council holding hearings in April ahead of a vote in May.

Themes for possible expansion at Disneyland include Frozen, Tangled, Peter Pan, Zootopia and Tron.
