Our friend J. Michael Waller’s just-released book Big Intel subtitled “How the CIA and FBI went from Cold War heroes to Deep State villains” is the most penetrating examination of the organization and power of the Deep State and its influence over the politics of the United States available to-date.
Waller, a veteran of the CIA and a long-time counter-intelligence operative also has deep ties in the conservative movement. Consequently, he brings to his examination of what’s gone wrong with the CIA and FBI the conservative’s skepticism of Big Government and distaste for the arrogance of Washington’s self-appointed elite, which he has seen and experienced from inside the highest levels of government.
We imagine most readers will be tempted to cut straight to the chapters on January 6 and Crossfire Hurricane and the effort to undermine candidate and then President Donald Trump, please don’t. If you do you will miss the key part of the book – how we got to the point where the FBI and CIA could do what they did, and continue to do, to subvert our constitutional liberty.
Early in the book, and early in his career Mr. Waller noted that radical Marxist Democrats – Communists actually – were making their way into influential positions in our government. Strangely, no one seemed prepared to do anything about it, even during the Reagan years when anti-Communism was a position shared by the establishment of both political parties.
Fast forward from 1980, when Mike Waller entered the secret world, to 2015, when Donald Trump came down the escalator and changed American politics, and the cultural Marxism of radical leftist Democrats who were once on the periphery of American politics is shared by the leading bureaucrats at the Nation’s top law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
What was the result of this gradual absorption of Marxism and Marxists into the DNA of the FBI and CIA?
We will let Mr. Waller’s Big Intel speak for itself:
General [James] Clapper’s lead-by-example mandate from the Obama years had survived Trump and was now soaking into the intelligence community’s cellular structure.
As laid out under Clapper’s direction a decade earlier, the designers of the FBI training program created a psychological manipulation process to force employees to modify their thought, manipulate their behavior, overcome their moral and ethical qualms, take direct action against their values, and become activist agents of cultural change. (Emphasis added.)
The training was explicitly not developed to assist agents and analysts in understanding people within a cultural demographic as [art of street-level law enforcement or criminal and national security investigations or analysis, or relating to juries. It was pure politicization. The program mapped out an agent-of-change strategy to transform the FBI’s entire culture and ethos. (Emphasis added.)
The training program is a fifty-six-page document, which is fully detailed to the public for the first time in Big Intel.
If you’ve been wondering, as we have, why the FBI has never cracked radical Marxist domestic terrorist organizations, such as ANTIFA or BLM, what Big Intel makes clear is it is because they are on the same side in the Obama-inspired rush to fundamentally change America.
In another chapter of Big Intel Mike Waller also lays out how, even during the Trump years, similar cultural Marxism-inspired training programs were underway at the CIA:
According to the CIA Diversity and Inclusion Glossary — yes, there is such a thing — “Cultural Competence is the ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with persons from cultures and/or belief systems other than one’s own and apply insights learned for better outcomes.” For normal people it may seem a decent basic definition. Among practitioners of Aesopian doubletalk, however, it means a form of Gramscian* consciousness-changing and critical theory behavior modification. The agency says as much by calling its Cultural Norms Framework “a tool that helps decision makers identify and promote patterns of behavior” within the bureaucracy itself.
The CIA Diversity and Inclusion Strategy lays out an internal psychological conditioning campaign against intelligence community professionals. It is diversity for diversity’s sake: subjective, always changing, never compromising, and never ending. It is not for mission success. “Weaving diversity and inclusion principles and practices throughout the talent cycle — performance management, talent development, and learning — allows employees and managers to fully benefit from a diverse and inclusive workplace and is a hallmark of this strategy,” the document says.
[Trump-appointed CIA Director Gina] Haspel laid out the strategy for an agency-wide cultural revolution, alienating personnel from merit and commitment to defense of American founding principles, psychologically conditioning intelligence personnel, reinforcing behavior modification, and bestowing preferential mobility along Marcusian logic. As was happening simultaneously among her old [British intelligence agency] MI6, the CIA director was imposing cultural Marxism on the agency. Enforcement was implied, details to follow.
Let the record show that your humble reviewer was one of the few to come out and publicly oppose the appointment of Gina Haspel as Director of the CIA, primarily because I believe she was up to her eyeballs in the London end of Crossfire Hurricane. That has never been proven, and the impulse to win the diversity hire prize of appointing the first female CIA director was too strong even for President Donald Trump to resist.
The bottom line: The new cultural competence program engineered by Haspel was all about intelligence workers’ mastery and acceptance of critical race theory and cultural Marxism. And the CIA, far from being reformed, would continue to operate as a state-within-a-state, even as President Trump and Republicans in Congress flailed away at the Deep State and its threats to constitutional liberty.
The good news is that Big Intel doesn’t just expose the facts of the takeover of the FBI and CIA by cultural Marxists – Mr. Waller proposes solutions to the threats to constitutional liberty that the takeover has created. And #1 is to purge the agencies and their contractors of all cultural Marxist programs, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs and their advocates and supporters, a job that a conservative President and Congress could undertake after the 2024 election. The bad news is, if a purge of cultural Marxism and cultural Marxists at the FBI and CIA isn’t conducted quickly and thoroughly by the next administration, it may be too late to undo the damage.

* Antonio Francesco Gramsci was an Italian Marxist philosopher, linguist, journalist, writer, and politician. Gramsci is best known for his theory of cultural hegemony which has inspired Marxists to make the “long march” to takeover cultural institutions from government bureaucracies, to universities, to movie studios, to internet companies and other mass media. President Biden’s Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is the son of the late Prof. Joseph Buttigieg, Translator of the Complete Prison Notebooks of Antonio Gramsci.
