Woman missing in California’s San Joaquin River after jumping in to save her daughter

A mom is missing in Stanislaus County, California, after she jumped into the San Joaquin River to help her daughter, who was struggling to keep her head above the water.

Brenda Duran, 30, entered the river at around 6:30 p.m. local time Thursday to help her 11-year-old daughter. When she began struggling herself, her 14-year-old son also got in to help the two of them, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post.

While her son was able to get himself and his sister out of the river to receive medical attention, Ms. Duran did not make her way out of the river.

First responders searched the river until 11 p.m. local time Thursday and resumed the search Friday until 6:30 p.m. Ms. Duran has still not been found.

Ms. Duran’s husband, Jaime Aguilar, told KCRA-TV that she is a “very thriving person, always smiling, never giving up and very compassionate,” and that the family, including cousins, have been searching for hours along with responding agencies.

Law enforcement said that Ms. Duran has been put into a database as the search continues this weekend.

“[Ms.] Duran was entered into the missing person’s database. The Sheriff’s Department will continue its search efforts to locate [Ms.] Duran,” SCSD Public Information Officer T. Luke Schwartz told news site SFGATE.
