The annual White House Correspondents Dinner was held on Saturday night. The featured celebrity speaker was Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost.
Let’s be clear, the dinner that allows journos to pat themselves on the back for what fine work they do (ahem!) and raises money for journalism majors in college, was mostly a campaign event for President Biden’s re-election this year.
Once upon a time, the dinner was a source of entertainment for political junkies. The celebrity speaker would roast the president and journalists would be mocked for their egos and sense of self-importance. It’s long been dubbed Nerd Prom. I no longer use that term because it’s an insult to nerds.
Colin Jost ended his time entertaining the crowd by paying tribute to his grandfather, a firefighter for 40 years. He died this year at age 95, Jost said. Jost wanted Biden to know that his grandfather voted for him. Grandpa voted for Biden because Biden is “a decent man.”
It could have been a nice story for all listeners but instead, Jost turned it into a form of political endorsement. The audience lapped it up, as did Biden.
That’s the trope that Biden has been the beneficiary of for years. He’s a career politician and historically wrong about almost everything, but he’s a decent man, you know. What a load of malarkey. Biden is a serial liar, a plagiarist, compromised with dictators due to his involvement with the Biden crime family, and he ignored the existence of a grandchild until he could no longer do that. Biden is a ‘devout Catholic’ who is campaigning on abortion without restrictions. He refuses to acknowledge he botched the withdrawal from Afghanistan that resulted in the murder of 13 American military members by a terrorist attack. When the bodies arrived at Dover Air Force Base, Biden looked at his watch as the caskets passed by him. He made a political calculation not to visit East Palestine, Ohio after a devastating train derailment because it is Trump country. Biden yells about Trump and his “mega MAGA” supporters in his speeches. He has gone wobbly in his support for Israel. The list goes on.
Jost loosely compared Biden and Trump on abortion.
“The candidate who is a famous New York City playboy took abortion rights away, and the guy who’s trying to give you your abortion rights back is an 80-year-old Catholic. How does that make sense?”
Look no further than Biden politicizing the DOJ to prosecute his political opponent to see the true nature of the president. Of course, he made jokes about Trump, and some referenced Trump’s legal troubles. Biden has ushered in lawfare into a presidential campaign. That isn’t just indecent behavior, it’s unAmerican.
“How refreshing it is to see a president at an event that doesn’t begin with a bailiff saying all rise?” Jost added. “And, I would like to point out, it is after 10 p.m., Sleepy Joe is still awake. While Trump has spent the past week falling asleep in court every morning.”
Jost continued, “The Republican candidate for president owes half a billion in fines for bank fraud and is currently spending his days farting himself awake during a porn star hush money trial and the race is tied? The race is tied. Nothing makes sense anymore.”
Jost mocked Lara Trump. Careful what you wish for, Colin. A WHCD during the Obama days is said to have helped provide Trump with his decision to run for president.
Lara Trump, the recently minted Republican National Committee co-chair who was in attendance, was also singled out. Jost joked about her cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” saying, “I can’t believe I’m saying this to a member of the Trump family, but maybe stick to politics.”
Jost and Biden were preaching to the choir, the press. Trump didn’t attend these events when he was president.
Senator John Fetterman (R-PA) wore a hoodie with a bow tie painted on it. Heh.
John Fetterman at the Correspondents Dinner maintains a formal-casual aesthetic with his mock tuxedo hoodie, pulling off the delicate balance of sloppy and chic.

The pro-Hamas useful idiots were outside the venue, doing what they do.

This annual event used to be mostly light-hearted and at least somewhat entertaining, regardless of which party was in the White House. The comedians chosen as speakers were able to lob insults to both sides of the aisle. Now it’s just another political rally for Democrats and their partners, the press. The press covers for Biden yet he does not grant them interviews because he isn’t able to do interviews without causing problems for his staff. Even when he has notecards, he can only manage an interview on late-night talk shows or Howard Stern’s radio show. On Friday, Biden told Stern he is open to debating Trump. Stern, known as a shock jock, only asked softball questions of Dementia Joe. Don’t hold your breath on that debate happening.
The narrative coming from the Biden campaign is that if Trump is elected in November, he will put an end to the event. That is red meat to Democrats. Trump has not said such a thing but since when does the press bother with accuracy? Trump has a record in office. He didn’t attend the event but he never shut it down. The idea is that Trump will prosecute journalists. That’s rich, considering that Biden and Jost attacked Fox News Channel and Jost took a swipe at NewsMax.
The way this dinner has been going for the last few years, would anyone miss it – besides the journalists – if it ended? I was a viewer on C-SPAN for years. Now I put it on for the president’s speech and the comedian’s bit. Last night I muted it on television and streamed the Jon Bon Jovi mini-series documentary on my laptop.
