Texan finds live artillery shell while digging in yard

Several houses in Duncanville, Texas, were evacuated Thursday after a resident found a live artillery shell buried in his yard.

The man, unnamed by authorities, called the Duncanville Police Department at 4:28 p.m. to report that he had found a missile-shaped object.

The local police evacuated several nearby homes and called in the Dallas Police Department Bomb Squad, which used an X-ray and determined the object was a live artillery shell.

Authorities didn’t say what type of shell it was or when it originated.

The homeowner told Duncanville police that the previous owner was a veteran who could have buried it in the yard years ago.

An Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was also called in and took possession of the shell. Police didn’t say whether the shell was detonated elsewhere.
