Northeast D.C. shooting: Man killed, two boys among 5 wounded

A man was killed in a hail of bullets Wednesday night and five others were wounded — including two boys — after D.C. police said a pair of gunmen opened fire in Northeast.

Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said the deadly shooting erupted around 6:10 p.m. in the 1100 block of 21st Street Northeast when the suspects fired on three men, a woman and two boys who were out on the street.

One of the men died at the scene, the chief said. The other two men, the woman and a 9-year-old boy were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. A 12-year-old boy who was also shot was dropped off at a hospital a short time later.

Chief Smith said all the injured victims are expected to survive.

“This is another example, and I’ve been here before in this space, of violence that we just cannot except in our communities,” the chief said. “My condolences go out to the families and friends who are impacted by the senseless gun violence tonight.”

The gunmen drove up in a car before they quickly hopped up and fired on the block, according to police.

Chief Smith said the suspects were driving a gray or light blue sedan that had dark-tinted windows. The car also had a white paper tag on the rear with no tags on the front, and a spare tire on the front passenger side.

The deadly shooting comes amid an uptick in violence in the District.

A man, a woman and an unidentified adult were shot Tuesday night in the Southeast neighborhood of Congress Heights, while two women were shot when an argument escalated into gunfire Monday afternoon on North Capitol Street Northeast.

The victims in both shootings are expected to survive.

Two 14-year-old boys were killed in separate shootings last week.

Avion Evans was gunned down April 4 on the Brookland Metro Station platform, and Irving Laboard was shot and killed the night before near Fort Dupont in Southeast.

Chief Smith on Tuesday announced the arrest of a 16-year-old boy in connection to Avion’s death.
