Total eclipse of the charts!
Bonnie Tyler’s power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart” rocketed up music rankings amid Monday’s total eclipse of the sun.
Ms. Tyler’s hit song spent 29 weeks on the Billboard charts in 1983, eventually hitting number 1 in October of that year and spending four weeks at the top.
On Monday, the 4K remastered music video for the song hit No. 2 on the YouTube music video chart, No. 1 on the Genius Top Songs Chart, and No. 1 across the U.S. according to music statistics website Last.fm.
It also did well on Apple Music and Spotify, getting up to No. 2 on the Apple charts. Leading up to Monday’s total eclipse of the sun, Ms. Tyler’s song was being streamed up to 50% more than usual, a Spotify spokesperson told CBS News.
Ms. Tyler also made note of her song’s renewed popularity on X, playing on its lyrics and writing that “every now and then it’s in the charts.”
This is not the first time “Total Eclipse of the Heart” has gotten a latter-day boost from current events. Amidst the previous total eclipse in 2017, digital downloads of the song increased by over 500%, according to Billboard.
Ms. Tyler is still a fan of singing the song, even after 40 years of it headlining her catalog.
“I still get excited when I hear the song on the radio. Every time the eclipse comes, everyone all over the world, they play ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ and I never get tired of singing it. … When I first heard it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, this song is amazing,’” Ms. Tyler told ABC’s Good Morning America.
