Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Vermont office goes up in flames; police search for arsonist

A fire this week at Sen. Bernard Sanders’ office in Burlington, Vermont, is being investigated as arson, according to local law enforcement.

The Burlington Police Department said in a statement that police and the Burlington Fire Department were dispatched to an “arson incident” Friday at the independent senator’s lone office in the state.

Police said an “unknown male subject” entered the vestibule of Mr. Sanders’ office and sprayed an “apparent accelerant” on the front door.

“He then lit the accelerant and fled,” police said. “A significant fire engulfed the door and part of the vestibule, impeding the egress of staff members who were working in the office and endangering their lives.”

No injuries were reported, but besides that burned door, other portions of the office building had water damage.

The suspect hadn’t been apprehended as of Saturday.
