House Democrats introduced legislation to change the name of a Miami prison for former President Donald Trump, just days after their Republican colleagues proposed changing the name of Washington Dulles International Airport to honor the former president.
The bill would rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution to the “Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution.”
The idea comes after Rep. Gerry Connolly, Virginia Democrat, said a federal prison would be a better option than an international airport to don Mr. Trump’s name. Part of Mr. Connolly’s district encompasses the airport, more colloquially known as Dulles.
“When our Republican colleagues introduced their bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I said the more fitting option would be to rename a federal prison,” Mr. Connolly said in a statement Friday.
“It is only right that the closest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago should bear his name. I hope our Republican friends will join us in bestowing upon Donald J. Trump the only honor he truly deserves,” he said.
Mr. Connolly co-sponsored the bill along with Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida and John Garamendi of California.
“Everyone knows President Trump loves to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings. But he’s never had his name on a federal building before and as a public servant I just want to help the former president. Help us make that dream a reality,” Mr. Moskowitz said in a statement.
The bill to rename the airport was introduced last Friday by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, Pennsylvania Republican, who suggested it be changed to “Donald J. Trump International Airport.”
The airport is currently named after John Foster Dulles, a former secretary of state under former President Dwight Eisenhower. The airport is located in Virginia, and is one of the three major airports in the DMV area.
