By now I should be beyond being surprised at any absurd thing that the UK police do.
After all, the country has basically reinstituted blasphemy laws, only this time protecting Muslims from having their feelings hurt by anybody who challenges the barbarous beliefs of their religion, and ordinary Britons can be arrested for praying in public.
But I am still naive enough to be surprised when people get arrested for jokes made in private.

How silly of me. By now I should know that wrongthink is the crime, not harming people in any way.
Of course, only certain people are subject to these rules. If you are in the right political party or of the correct religion, you can do or say whatever you want.

Ricky Jones did go to trial, but unlike Lucy Connolly, he was acquitted. I think we all know why.
The fact that a group of friends can be arrested for swapping racist jokes aimed at each other is indicative of how totalitarian the country has become, and as with all totalitarian regimes, the rules are utterly arbitrary and capricious.

Muslims can, on a whim, kneel down in a street and begin praying, but a Christian praying on a street corner, silently and disturbing nobody, can wind up in handcuffs.
It’s the content, not the conduct. It’s the who, not the what.

Outside of incitement, the very concept of hate speech as a crime is a corruption of liberal values. It’s perfectly OK to harshly criticize somebody for saying something offensive, but it crosses the line to arrest them for it unless they go beyond the bounds of inciting violence.
Of course, in the minds of British politicians and police, one of the reasons why criticizing Islam is that they know that many Muslims are quick on the trigger when it comes to committing violence for any offense. Rather than punishing the violence when it occurs, though, their solution is to punish British people to prevent them from doing anything that might set Muslims off.
It’s an inversion of our values.
Most of us are a product of a society that taught us from an early age the old maxim that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” When I was taught that, it seemed so obvious to me that it sounded almost silly.
Now the lesson is a bit more complicated: left-wingers and Muslims tend to be violent, so we will arrest you rather than let you offend them.
