Trump has stark warning for NYC after democratic socialists sweep primaries

President Trump predicted bad things for New York after socialist candidates swept Democratic primary elections in U.S. House primary races across New York City.

The candidates, all endorsed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, underscored the growing power of the far-left wing of the Democratic Party.

Mr. Trump said the trend of electing democratic socialists will create problems in New York and elsewhere.

“Many communists running in badly failing Blue States,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The votes seem to have them doing quite well against each other. The bad news is that history has conclusively shown that the downtrodden states that they will soon be running will only get worse.”

In a follow-up post, Mr. Trump vowed: “America the Beautiful will NEVER be a communist country.”

In Tuesday’s elections, State Assemblymember Claire Valdez, a democratic socialist, prevailed in the Democratic primary to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez in New York’s 7th Congressional District. The 7th District, which covers parts of Brooklyn and Queens, has been dubbed the “Commie Corridor” because of its far-left leanings. Mr. Mamdani, one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent socialists, enjoyed some of his strongest support in that district during last year’s mayoral election.

Meanwhile, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a relative newcomer and a former Mamdani campaign staffer, pulled off a stunning upset over incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat, leader of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Winning the primaries in the heavily Democratic districts essentially assures that Ms. Valdez and Ms. Chevalier will win the general election in November, delivering to Capitol Hill two more Democrats who are also members of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Currently, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan are members of the Democratic Socialists of America.

The socialist wins were not nationwide in the primary elections Tuesday. Slightly more moderate Democrats won in primaries across the country, including in Maryland and Utah.
