Wolves injure Indiana zookeepers following pack member’s death

Staff at an Indiana zoo were injured by wolves after another wolf there died of natural causes.

The wolf’s death occurred Tuesday at the Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City, Indiana, 60 miles southeast of Chicago.

After that, “an incident occurred involving other wolves and members of the animal care staff,” the Michigan City Parks & Recreation Department said on social media.

The Michigan City Police Department said a 39-year-old zookeeper was injured after being bitten on her neck and limbs by the wolves before she managed to escape, according to Chicago’s WMAQ-TV.

In addition, police said a 34-year-old zookeeper suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to WLS, another Chicago station.

They were bitten on the arm but scrambled to the roof of a building inside the wolf enclosure before being rescued via ladder by police, according to WMAQ.

City park officials on Wednesday said all involved were “stable.”

The zoo opened normally Wednesday, but the wolf exhibit remained closed so that zoo staff could “monitor the animals and assess the situation,” Michigan City Parks officials said.

In addition to the wolf, a lemur at the Washington Park Zoo died Tuesday of lung failure, park officials said.
