There was a time, not so long ago, when my problems with most Democrats were that we disagreed on policies and that they used government as a piggy bank for themselves and their friends.
I thought of them as a combination of stupid ideas attached to an organized crime entity. That’s bad enough to vote against them, even when I disagreed with Republicans, but then again, they were just a somewhat more extreme version of what is common in politics. Any time you combine money and power, grifters are gonna grift off of it. Government is a more sophisticated protection racket, and hence a necessary evil.
The thing is, those aren’t my biggest problems with Democrats these days, because they have become the party of untreated mental illness, often psychotic.
No doubt you heard about the Democrats’ misfire on Memorial Day. They used their “patriotic” Memorial Day post to blast Donald Trump, grossly disrespecting the soldiers who died in Operation Epic Fury.
The post was roundly criticized, including by some prominent Democrats. So much so that it was deleted and replaced by a more normal patriotic one.
That post was not an anomaly, though, and the reason why is clear: the Democrats have become the party of hate and psychosis.

I feel comfortable saying that the problem is party-wide because you don’t have to cherry-pick the rantings of randos on social media. You can do that with any group, Republicans, Democrats, Christians, Jews, art collectors, historians…there are obnoxious and mentally ill people in any group large enough to have more than a few hundred people, if that. We can’t hold everybody accountable for the rantings of people in your extended social circle.

They scraped together a life in Phoenix, worked themselves to the bone, and gave their daughter every opportunity they were never handed. The classic American immigrant arc — sacrifice in one generation so the next can rise.
𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐛𝐢𝐠-𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦. 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦. 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐭.
The thing is, the rantings and ravings are coming from the top, such as the official social media platform of the Democratic Party itself, which now embraces Nazis who brag about masturbating in public bathrooms and rant that a fellow soldier deserved to die. What was fringe not so long ago is now embedded in the institution.
Democrats now organize marches with people calling for the death of the president, welcome Hasan Piker, and think Jennifer Welch is the new podcast hotness.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that the Democrats, who have a few groups that make up the pillars of support for the party, have become the natural home for mentally ill women, who unerringly gravitate to it. It’s not just young women, of course. AWFLs tend to be middle-aged, but young women are particularly attracted to the party at least partly because they are, objectively, the most mentally ill population in the country.
AWFLs tend to be bored women who are looking for meaning in their lives, now that the nest is empty; young Democrat women are often genuinely crazy.
The Democrats’ social media reflects this demographic especially well, in a way that the ranting antisemitic/pro-Hamas wing doesn’t.
It’s a different kind of rage, which fits with the Democratic Party being an institution, rather than thought leaders. Institutions seem to go for the HR kind of cruelty, and this is just an extreme version of that.
Performative mental illness has become a key part of the Democratic Party’s identity. What they call “Cluster B Personality Disorders.”
Cluster B personality disorders are a group of mental health conditions representing styles of interacting with oneself and others. These styles of interacting involve dramatic and erratic behaviors. People diagnosed with these types of conditions have intense, unstable emotions and act impulsively.
The four types of Cluster B personality disorders include:
- Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD): People diagnosed with ASPD show a lack of respect toward others. They generally don’t follow socially accepted rules.
- Borderline personality disorder (BPD): People diagnosed with BPD have difficulty regulating their emotions. This results in low self-esteem, mood swings and impulsive behaviors.
- Histrionic personality disorder (HPD): People diagnosed with HPD have intense, unstable emotions and a distorted self-image. They have an overwhelming desire for others to notice them. They’re easily influenced by others.
- Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD): People diagnosed with NPD have a sense of being better than others. They have an intense need for praise. They lack empathy for others.
Sound familiar?
What’s striking is not that we see a lot of this among Democrats. It’s that it has become so pervasive that the official Democratic Party X account is run by somebody who displays all the symptoms.
You would think that a party that is filled with professionals in the cultural production industries would be smart enough to hide the fact, but it has become so normal in Democratic Party circles that most don’t even notice.
Democratic Party politicians like Tammy Duckworth, who was smart enough to publicly recoil at the Memorial Day post, have to be more sensitive to appearances than most. But for Democrats who rarely spend time around ordinary people, it’s considered perfectly normal to strike out at anybody they disagree with.
I find that scary. I have for a while, but it is getting much worse. Which is why I think that Democrats are losing their moral authority with ordinary people, who may still vote for them against Republicans, but who recognize the party has gone off the rails. Over the long term that will hurt them at the polls.
