Man accused of fatally shooting woman in Alexandria apartment charges at police who kill him

Alexandria, Virginia, police said officers shot and killed a suspect who had fatally shot a woman inside an apartment and then barricaded himself inside early Monday.

Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said officers found the unnamed man holed up in a room inside the Canterbury Square complex around 4 a.m. after they were called to the scene of the shooting.

The officers ordered the suspect to surrender and come out of the room with his hands up, but he did not cooperate, the chief said.

“The suspect then emerged, running full speed at the officers, charging at them, and there were two service weapons that were fired by our officers,” Chief McGuire said.

Officers tried resuscitating the man after he was wounded, but he died at the scene. The woman was pronounced dead inside the complex.

Authorities did not say whether the man was armed or if any weapons were found in the apartment.

Investigators said the situation likely stemmed from a domestic dispute between the man and the woman.

The two officers who opened fire have been with the Alexandria Police Department for the last seven years. They have been placed on leave while officials review the shooting.
