Freedom 250 task force plans to break world record for largest fireworks display on Fourth of July

The Freedom 250 task force, established by the president to help celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, wants to set a world record for fireworks on Independence Day.

Freedom 250 said they want to run a display on the National Mall for 30 minutes, nearly twice the length of the 17.5-minute display held last year.

It will be a “breathtaking fireworks finale that will shatter world records and stand as the most spectacular firework display the world has ever seen,” Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner told Axios.

The Interior Department previously said on social media in February that this year’s Independence Day fireworks on the National Mall would be “nearly 20 times larger” than those in a typical year, and the White House webpage for Freedom 250 also says the show will be the “largest pyrotechnics display in the history of the world.”

The current world record for the largest fireworks display was set in 2016 when the Iglesia ni Cristo set off 810,904 fireworks at a New Year’s celebration in the Philippines, according to Guinness World Records.

Freedom 250 has contracted Pennsylvania-based company Pyrotecnico to help put on the display and break the record; Pyrotecnico marketing director Jodi Dague told the news outlet that “we are shooting to break the record.

Pyrotecnico was previously involved in setting the record for the largest daytime fireworks display on Feb. 21 at the International Fireworks Championship in Las Vegas. Over the course of seven minutes, 15,783 fireworks were set off according to Guinness World Records; the show also featured the use of over 1,000 pyrotechnic drones, per the Pyrotecnico website.
