Trump invites China’s Xi to White House for a September visit

President Trump on Thursday invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House for a visit on Sept. 24.

Mr. Trump extended the invite to his Chinese counterpart during a banquet dinner Thursday evening in Beijing, which was Thursday morning in Washington. The banquet is part of Mr. Trump’s two-day summit with Mr. Xi that focused on trade, international cooperation and the war in Iran.

“Thank you again, President Xi, for this beautiful welcome, and tonight, it is my honor to extend an invitation to you, Madam Peng, to visit us at the White House this September 24, and we look forward to it,” Mr. Trump said during the toast in which he also honored the “very special relationship” between the two nations.

He addressed the invitation to Peng Liyuan, a Chinese singer who has served as the first lady of China since 2012.

Mr. Xi’s last visit to the U.S. was in November 2023, when he sat down with President Biden in San Francisco during a meeting of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group, which is focused on bolstering economic growth in the region.

Mr. Xi visited the White House in 2015, during a state visit hosted by President Obama. During that visit, he was welcomed with a 21-gun salute on the South Lawn, attended a formal state dinner and participated in a joint press conference with Mr. Obama.
