He previously served as assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs during Mr. Trump’s first term and worked on Mr. Trump’s presidential transition team as an adviser to then-CIA Director nominee Mike Pompeo. Earlier in his career, he served as a foreign policy adviser to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and held national security roles under House Republican leaders Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy, according to Newsweek.
Mr. Trump also suggested Mr. Karem bore responsibility for Mr. McConnell’s resistance to ending the Senate filibuster and his failure to back the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote.
