Rudy Giuliani out of ICU, still hospitalized with pneumonia

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been moved out of the intensive care unit but remains hospitalized as he continues to recover from pneumonia, his spokesperson announced Wednesday.

Spokesperson Ted Goodman said Mr. Giuliani, 81, “will spend some time recovering before leaving the hospital,” and that “the mayor and his family appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers sent his way.”

President Trump announced Mr. Giuliani’s hospitalization in critical condition Sunday in a Truth Social post, calling him a “True Warrior and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City.”

Mr. Giuliani’s recovery has been complicated by a pre-existing condition. His spokesman noted that Mr. Giuliani’s presence at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001, later led to a diagnosis of restrictive airway disease — a condition that compounds any respiratory illness. The respiratory illness quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to stabilize his condition; by Monday, he was breathing on his own, according to CNN.

A priest visited Mr. Giuliani’s bedside Tuesday and reportedly performed last rites, according to OAN. His team said he intends to apply for the World Trade Center Health Program, believing his current illness is linked to his Sept. 11 exposure.

Mr. Giuliani, who rose to prominence in the 1980s as Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor, later became a close ally and personal attorney to Mr. Trump and one of the most prominent figures in the president’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election results. He was subsequently disbarred in New York and Washington, D.C., and settled a $148 million defamation judgment brought by two Georgia election workers he had falsely accused of fraud. Mr. Trump pardoned Mr. Giuliani and others tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 election in November 2025, though presidential pardons do not apply to state-level matters. A Georgia judge later dismissed the state case against Mr. Giuliani entirely. He still faces state charges in Arizona.

Mr. Giuliani will remain under hospital monitoring and treatment.
