A United Airlines flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey was diverted to Bangor, Maine, on Friday because drunken passengers were being physically disruptive, the airline said.
“United flight 883 landed in Bangor this morning after two passengers, who appeared intoxicated, became disruptive. Law enforcement officials removed the two passengers. … The customers will be banned from future United flights while we review this matter,” United told the BBC in a statement.
One was arrested. Neither of the passengers was named by authorities.
“An individual was detained and arrested on scene after consulting with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Maine. This incident has no nexus to terrorism,” the FBI said in a statement, according to WABC-TV.
A total of 150 passengers and 10 crew were on the plane, according to NJ.com.
While the airline and authorities did not specify what the two passengers allegedly did, United told WABC-TV that the behavior reached “Level 2,” which means behavior that is physically disruptive under Federal Aviation Administration standards.
The flight landed in Bangor at 10 a.m. and left for Newark about 90 minutes later.
