Montgomery County police arrested a 19-year-old man after a student was shot during a fight Wednesday in a high school parking lot.
Police did not identify the 19-year-old or the wounded student, and did not say if any charges have been filed. The condition of the wounded student, who was transported to a hospital, was not disclosed.
The fight occurred some time before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of Blake High School in Cloverly.
A Montgomery County Police Department Community Engagement Officer and school security went to the parking lot, found a handgun on the ground and took the 19-year-old into custody, police said in a news release.
A male juvenile with a gunshot wound showed up at a hospital shortly afterward. An initial investigation indicates the youth was involved in the fight, police said.
“This was precipitated by an unwelcome, uninvited adult coming onto campus, engaging in a physical altercation with young people on this campus, and ultimately led to a gunshot wound,” Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Taylor said at a briefing, according to WJLA-TV.
In a letter to Blake families, Mr. Taylor and Blake High Principal Ahmed Adelekan said students were involved in the lunch-time incident and the wounded juvenile was one of them.
Mr. Taylor and Mr. Adelekan specified new security measures at Blake. Students will not be allowed to eat outside for the remainder of the school year, food deliveries will be forbidden and delivery drivers will be turned away.
