Nikki Haley calls for ‘on the record’ vote on RNC resolution to bar payment of Trump’s legal fees

Nikki Haley wants the Republican Party’s governing body on the record about covering former President Donald Trump’s legal fees.

The former South Carolina governor called on the Republican National Committee to vote publicly on a draft resolution to curb the national party’s ability to direct its funds toward any candidate’s legal fees.

“All Americans, and Republicans especially, deserve a vote on the record on that resolution,” Ms. Haley said Wednesday while campaigning in Utah. “We deserve to know how the RNC is going to spend their money and if it’s going to go towards legal fees.”

A series of resignations at the RNC and their likely replacements in the coming days will strengthen Mr. Trump’s grip on the party with loyalists, including daughter-in-law Lara Trump, expected to take over the top posts.

One of those incoming Trump loyalists, Chris LaCivita, has previously said the RNC will not pay Mr. Trump’s legal fees. But Haley campaign officials have said a mere statement isn’t enough and want a vote on a formal policy.

Ms. Haley herself said Wednesday that the RNC might move support for congressional candidates to a “legal slush fund.”

“Are you going to ask the question about what happens with that resolution that says you can’t spend it on legal fees?” she asked reporters.
