Few big cities in the United States are run well, and it almost goes without saying that none of them are in Blue states.
But until relatively recently, the incompetence or corruption of city governments was counterbalanced, at least partly, by the overwhelming advantages Blue cities had, keeping them wealthy enough to putter along and remain vibrant. It took massive corruption and the spread of lawlessness to totally ruin a city, as happened to Detroit.
Cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, or San Francisco benefit from a concentration of highly talented people, corporations with deep roots, financial centers of power, and already large populations whose investments in the cities tend to make moving difficult.
You really have to screw up to ruin a city like Boston. It has Harvard, MIT, and all the benefits that come from being attractive and hundreds of years old.
Still, when you use the most powerful destructive force in human history, even cities like Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles can be ruined. Newer cities, like Seattle and Portland, can be ruined even more quickly.

That destructive force? It’s socialism, of course. Socialism is powerful enough to ruin entire countries, so killing off cities that are as resilient as Boston or Chicago is child’s play.
Corruption and big cities have been companions as long as there have been cities to become corrupt. It’s human nature. Concentrate a lot of wealth in one place, and the locusts come to eat up their share. Political machines learn how to skim enough off the top to become wealthy and powerful, and also learn how not to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
Socialists manage the first, but never learn the second. They actively destroy everything they touch. In truly wealthy cities like Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City, it may take a while because there is so much wealth to consume, but the results are inevitable.
Mayor Wu of Boston is well on her way to accomplishing what should be impossible: bankrupting the city. Not as far along as, say, Chicago, but her focus on DEI, LGBTQIASLKJDFIU)(WERUJL:S issues, and her coddling of criminals, especially illegal alien rapists and child abusers, is eating away the foundations of a once-great city.
A city that cannot afford paper clips because so much money is going out the door to her favored NGOs.

No doubt, welfare fraud is as rampant in Boston as in any Blue city, and Wu probably sees this as an equity issue. Woody Allen, for all his flaws as a human being, captured the liberal mindset beautifully in Annie Hall.
We think of liberals as suicidal. But they are also homicidal, sacrificing the lives and prosperity of others in order to pursue their moral crusades for the downtrodden. The socialists always do well for themselves, as you can see from the massive increase in the net worth of The Squad members, and every liberal in politics.

Their goal is to redistribute wealth, and in doing so they engage in a massive destruction of wealth. They don’t just skim off the top; it’s more appropriate to say they conduct armed robberies of taxpayers, shooting more than a few along the way. Eventually the taxpayers get fed up and move elsewhere, having learned their lessons.

People will tolerate some level of corruption, as long as things keep working well enough for the majority to live well and in security. But when public services break down, the schools decline ever more each years, and random violence becomes rampant, even a city as attractive as San Francisco or Boston starts losing population.

Portland, Seattle, and Chicago are previews of what is coming. Seattle just elected a socialist mayor, which almost went unnoticed because Mamdani is so riveting to watch. Mamdani is smart and charming. Katie Wilson is genuinely stupid, and Seattle’s prosperity has roots that are far shallower than New York City’s.

Corrupt politicians have dual priorities: graft, and keeping the golden goose healthy enough to keep laying eggs.
