Sen. Mitch McConnell will resign in November from his post as Senate Republican leader, capping off a nearly two-decade tenure in the high-profile role.
“It’s time for a new generation of leadership,” Mr. McConnell said in a speech on the Senate floor announcing his decision to step down as leader.
The Kentucky Republican is the chamber’s longest-serving party leader and he has weathered recent attempts by conservatives to oust him from his post.
Mr. McConnell is 82 years old and has suffered several health episodes in the past year that stemmed from a fall and concussion.
