Russia is Helping Iran Target Americans – HotAir

For the past few years we’ve been helping Ukraine kill Russians, not just by providing weapons but also by offering them intelligence that they couldn’t get on their own. And of course an American company, Starlink, has become the backbone of the Ukrainian war effort even as Russia is denied access to the same service.

Now Russia is returning the favor. According to the Washington Post, Russia is providing Iran with intelligence to help them target Americans.

Russia is providing Iran with targeting information to attack American forces in the Middle East, the first indication that another major U.S. adversary is participating — even indirectly — in the war, according to three officials familiar with the intelligence…

Since the war began Saturday, Russia has passed Iran the locations of U.S. military assets, including warships and aircraft, said the three officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the matter’s sensitivity.

“It does seem like it’s a pretty comprehensive effort,” one of the people said.

Six US service members, Army reservists, have been killed in the fighting with Iran so far. All six were killed when an Iranian drone struck a port in Kuwait

The first US service members to die in the conflict between the US and Iran were killed by a direct Iranian strike on a makeshift operations center at a civilian port in Kuwait on Sunday morning local time, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.

The death toll from that attack at the Shuaiba port has since risen to six, US Central Command announced on Monday afternoon, after the remains of two additional service members were recovered…

The building had concrete barriers surrounding it, the source said — typical for military structures overseas to protect against things like car bombs — but nothing that could shield it from drones or missiles.

CBS News reported yesterday that the Iranians had “scouted the facility” and realized it had no defense against drones. No one is directly saying that Russia was responsible for targeting that site but the Post report suggests it’s the kind of thing Russian intelligence might be helping Iran to do.

Analysts said that the sharing of intelligence would fit the pattern of Iran’s strikes against U.S. forces, including command and control infrastructure, radars and temporary structures, like the one in Kuwait where six service members were killed.

The CIA’s station at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital, also was struck in recent days.

Iran is “making very precise hits on early warning radars or over-the-horizon radars,” said Dara Massicot, an expert on the Russian military at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “They’re doing this in a very targeted way. They’re going after command and control,” she added.

Interestingly, the US seems to be turning to the current experts on dealing with Iranian drones guided by Russian intelligence. Yesterday President Zelenskyy of Ukraine said he’d received a request for help from the US and that “specialists” from Ukraine would be responding.

This might actually be a miscalculation on Russia’s part. Arguably the best thing Putin has going for him at this point is President Trump’s relative lack of interest in supporting Ukraine and his insistence that Ukraine needs to make a deal to end the war with Russia. If anything is gong to change Trump’s mind, it might be the fact that Russia is helping Iran target US service members. Plus the fact that Ukraine is actively helping us respond makes it look even worse.

Finally, the story does have one bit of good news. So far it appears that China is staying out of this. There’s no evidence so far that they are also supporting Iran’s military. Given China’s close connections with Iran, their refusal to back an ally, at least so far, is noteworthy.
